Dragon*Con 2008

Bioshock hat tip
Warning, excessive steampunkery

Most of the pictures are stolen, but some aren't.

Bright and early Thursday morning I get picked up by Traci and Veronica to go get a good hotel room. Once there, you could tell the con-goers from the muggles and mundies. We get a room on the 7th floor of the Hyatt, which was the lowest they could put us. As we're walking to the room, who do I run into but [info]rajsmith  and [info]laughingmagpie  from my favorite steampunk crew, the Vertigo! I dropped my bag in my room and we went and had coffee. I then went home with the intent of going to class, but I quickly abandoned the idea, as there was zero chance I'd actually pay attention. So I went back to the hotel and went down to pre-reg to wait in the doom line. I actually really like pre-reg line, it's fun talking to people, trying to figure out what costumes people are doing, and running into people I've met at previous cons. I waited in line with [info]bellutien and [info]lordofhaladin  and a ton of others. I kept passing Zack in line and he passed me a bag of donuts, which I shared around. Apparently nobody realized I knew him and thought I had just stolen the donuts. Then I poked Laurie and Geena on the shoulder and the guy behind them thought I was just poking strangers. The K line was short and I got through quickly. I saw Mr. [info]normal and Mrs. [info]emiko , hung out with Zac and Lucas a while playing Zac's new game. But I tend to not stay in one place at cons, so we abandoned the game halfway through.
Hung out with Foe and Wade a bit Thursday, resisted putting on a costume, wore a mustache instead. We came up with a group costume idea for next year. Called it an early night.

I apparently missed Foe and Wade as big game furry hunters. I also missed Steampunkbuilder, who is a cool guy I met last year.

Friday
Hung out around con watching the people. Around noon or 1 I called to see where the Outlanders were. They assured me they'd call when they were getting suited up, but they never bothered to call me, so I wandered around in costume without them. That's the one thing I hate about group costumes, you have to hope you're important enough that they think to call you. The first half of the day I was dressed as a pirate. Had fun at the Three Quarter Ale show. Some old guys tried to talk me into the Dawn Contest, though I politely (and a bit confused) declined on the grounds that I have never read Dawn and do not waste my time with costume contests.

Later, I steampunked up for the meet up at the Hilton before Abney Park. It was a great meetup. I got to see Dr. Haggis's wrist-mounted telegraph, as well as really awesome Dr. Horrible named Eric who also dressed as a Stonecutter from The Simpsons.

Some of my favorite people! I met Ben and Noel last year at the pirate party and they were so cool that I just had to continue knowing them.

Jenna and Noel being the cutest badasses around!

Me a-wanderin'

Steampunks mulling about and mingling like so much wine.

Some American western steampunks that look suspiciously like some pirates I know.
See:

Sorry, that picture just cracked me up so much that I have to share it with the world.

Group shot!

Confetti and bubble gun working. Mr. Ian was so proud of those. Bonus ass-grab and automaton!

Saturday
Rolled out of bed in time to catch most of the parade. Long cat is long. Jayne hat is special.
Had lots of fun running around doing  whatever I did. Alas, I do not recall exact stuffs. But I know it was fun! I think maybe this was when me and Mr. Ian went into the dealers rooms, it would account for the loss of an entire day...
Anyways, at late afternoon we got dressed up as little red riding hood and the big bad wolf.

He wanted full face makeup, but I'm not crazy about how it turned out. He was saying that since his hair is black, his face should be too, but I think maybe he doesn't get what I was originally going for. Ah well, it looks vaguely like how I wanted it to.
When that costume got too hot (a few hours), we changed into latenight steampunk, which for me meant Pin Up Girl.

Hung out in the Marriot with Brute Force, Mrs. Force, and the Austin crew

Had a showdown with Jenna.

got to see steam Lincoln

A Lucas!

Sunday sunday SUNDAY!

Hung out as Draco Malfoy most of the day. Had fun chatting with people most of the morning.

Went to a Harry Potter photoshoot, had fun making everyone laugh, and then had to leave early to go do the Mr. Friskett show. The show went really well and we ended up with another running gag. The at some point I found the way to the Sheraton for the Yule ball. Man, that hotel sure did not like con-goers! They were glaring at us the whole time we were around any employees. The Yule ball was a lot of fun, I wish I had gotten to stay a little longer. I had to leave to go to the Pirate Party. Unfortunately, I was stuck behind a table the whole time for costume judging. I think I'm through with costume contests all together. At least at big cons, that's for sure!

I agree, those are completely awesome costumes. [info]stupid_drawings is ridiculously hot as a pirate redhead, too... yarr!

Steam Lincoln was full of win.

Thrown in with a touch of haberdashery and we've got WIN

You win by making hats? ... yeah, actually, I can see that.

The doorman at the Sheraton was actually pretty boss. But you actually had to get to the front door in the first place to meet him. Called me "Doc" the second time he saw me. (Of course, I only had the lab coat for the con.)

Context is everything. For a minute I thought you were another diminutive redheaded female friend from Avondale who had a habit of hugging me.

Draco Malfoy/Indiana Jones slashfic?

Oh, dood, I might be doing a sequel!

They're actually some extremely fancy spats over some extremely tired shoes that don't like conventions any more. But thank you. It's my favorite corset ever.

Yes, I did! And the photo got tucked into one of my hp books. Hopefully I forget it's there, and then at some point when I'm having a bad day, I'll pick up the book and find it and it will be a great surprise.

I think you could pull off steampunk if you wanted to.

And we thought you were so cool we had to hunt you down like the stalkers we are.... errr, I mean, it was great running into you randomly and totally not on purpose and stuff again! So, you have to come to Austin with an Ian if you can tear him away and visit. You have until April, then we leave the country. BUT if you don't, we are dorky enough that we will be returning to hit con again before we leave again.

I want to come visit you. While I'm in Astin, I could visit my friend Colleen, too.
Plus, when you move and become rich, I can follow you for a visit... if I ever have thousands of dollars sitting around... or if I get a job with an airline. That last one sounds doable.

I love the steam stuff! Pretty awesome. I loved all of your costumes, especially your steampunk stuff. Is that a gadget backpack you were wearing? Or just a decorative back thing? In any case, it's pretty cool.

You should post to [info]steamfashion! If you come to LA, we should go to The Edison, which is a steam lounge in downtown.

Poking strangers and stealing donuts ftw!

I thought you looked totally, amazingly great as a lady pirate, but then I got to the end and you were the Perfect Draco Malfoy again. And then I scrolled back up to the pirate picture and noticed you were smirking and you looked totally, amazingly like DRACO MALFOY DRESSED AS A LADY PIRATE.

Hey, wanna bet there’s a fanfic about that floating around somewhere?
